Forty five 9th grade Leo Baeck students were welcomed with open arms by the students and teachers of the El Gazali school and the residents of Um El Fahem when they visited last week, the 2nd meeting in a bridge-building Schools for Human Rights program in which the Leo Baeck Junior High School is representing Israel.

2010 Israel's Young Scientist of the Year
President Shimon Peres awarded Leo Baeck High School student Adi Friedman 1st Prize in the annual Intel-Israel Young Scientist Competition for her technique in replacing eroded spinal discs. Adi, who will receive a full university scholarship for her work, will represent Israel in this year's International Young Scientists Competition
17 Leo Baeck students (Grades 9-11), representing Germany, Afghanistan and debating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Middle East Model United Nations in Even Yehuda, spent their time intensely presenting their country's policies on various issues, debating them, and negotiating agreements.

Ethiopian-Israeli scholarship student, Million Haile, whose father came to Israel with Operation Moses and is himself a proud graduate of the Leo Baeck Education Center, delivered an outstanding speech at the Knesset last week.
Million elicited rousing applause with her passionate speech about the State's coercion of the Ethiopian new immigrant population to study within a religious educational framework.

School for Human Rights
4 student ambassadors of the Junior High School's School for Human Rights Program are representing Israel in London this week at the International Light a Candle Children for Human Rights Conference
The Leo Baeck Elementary School opened in 2007 with 70 pupils, ages 6 to 7. One year later its numbers have swelled to 125 children, ages 6 to 8, with a projected future enrollment of 300. Headed by dedicated Rabbi Ofek Meir, the school provides a 43 hour week filled with academic learning, progressive Jewish content and a wide variety of enrichment programming including musical instrument lessons, yoga, swimming and ecological excursions.
